ATLIB Basketball Competition 2011
Basketball
In March 2011, undaunted by our defeat in Volleyball, WJC was back in the sporting arena. This time the game was Basketball. WJC made it to the finals. At the end of the allotted time the game was tied. The game went into overtime. Tensions were high; WJC could have been playing against the Miami Heats or the Chicago Bulls. It was the ‘baddest’ team from the South of Belize, Ecumenical Junior College.
So the team dug deeply, we held our collective breaths and when the final whistle was blown, WJC were ahead by one point. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am proud to say that WJC, is now the Association of Tertiary Level Institution in Belize National Champions in Basketball! Two members of the 2011 graduating class were part of this winning team. They played on the team every year of the three years they were students of WJC. These are the the Kobe Bryants of WJC, Mr. Kareem Elrington and Mr. Devon Defour. To understand what a stellar achievement this is, you need to appreciate that these two gentlemen along with others from the team work at full time jobs during the day, come to school from 5.30pm until 8.30pm, and then go out to practice for basketball from 9.00 to 10.30 and sometimes 11.00pm in the night.
We truly appreciate their effort and dedication to the job. It proves the powerful adage-if you can dream it, and you are willing to work for it, you can achieve it! I would also like to thank the Sports Coordinator, Mr. John Marsden and his able coaches for a job well done.
