UB softballers win ATLIB National Championship
Belize City, February 2, 2008
The University of Belize softball team won the Association of Tertiary Level Institutions of Belize (ATLIB) national softball championship by hammering the St John’s College Junior College team 12-6 in the final at the Rogers Stadium on Saturday, February 2.
The SJCJC softballers won Game 1 against the Southern Region sub-champs, Galen University, by a score of 5-1. SJC seized a 1–zip lead when Sharette Vernon came home in the 1st inning and the lead increased to 2-zip when Kimani Williams also came home in the 2nd inning. SJCJC pitcher Brandon Bood and Andrew Blair came home in the 3rd inning and when Sharette Vernon rounded the bases a 2nd time, SJCJC led 5-zip; until Galen pitcher Marconi Leal scored in the 5th inning.
Team UB won Game 2 over the Northern Region sub-champ, Corozal Junior College 5-zip. UB’s Carlyon Flores came home in the 1st inning, and Shane Williams extended the UB lead to 2-zip when he come home in the 2nd inning. Tyrone Castillo and Stephen Williams made it 4-zip when they came home in the 3rd inning and Carlyon Flores scored a 5th run when he homered in the 4th inning.
Team UB also won Game 3 of the championship final 12-6. Carlyon Flores and Tyrone Castillo came home in the 1st inning, in which Steven “Muerte” Williams homered to make it 3-zip
SJCJC got on the scoreboard when Sharette Vernon came home and Ron Nicholson followed in the 1st inning. Nicholson scored a 3rd run in the 3rd inning.
Steven Williams regained the lead 4-3 for UB when he homered again in the 3rd inning. SJC Brian Palacio also homered in the 4th inning but the UB hitters scored 4 more runs in the 4th inning and a 12th run in the 5th inning, and SJCJC got in one more run when Palacio came home in the 6th inning.
