WESLEY JUNIOR COLLEGE-SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY, BATON ROUGE
BELIZE STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM 2009.

In December, 2008, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between Wesley Junior College and Southern University, Baton Rouge. The MOU was designed to foster a friendly relationship through mutual cooperation in teaching and research between WJC and SUBR.  Both institutions agree that they will be willing to offer mutual support in the following areas:

  • Faculty and student exchange
  • Joint research activities
  • Cultural exchanges
  • Extension activities
  • Exchange of academic materials and other information
  • Special short term academic program
  • Participation in seminars and academic meetings

On June 13, seven students and two professors from SUBR arrived in Belize for the first study abroad program. The program lasted for three weeks during which students were involved in various activities eg. Lectures on multiculturalism in Belize, Spanish classes, service learning at Wesley Lower school and Stella Maris school.  The students also visited a number of places in Belize as part of the learning process. These included Belize museum, Old Belize, Chaa Creek natural history centre, Xunantunich Maya ruin, Sabal farm, the Gulisi Garinagu museum, Hopkins, San Pedro and Caye Caulker, and Bacab ecopark.
The three weeks were packed full with learning, and adventures as the students and their professors learnt about Belize, its history, peoples and cultures.
Future plans:

    • WJC students to be included in all the above activities alongside SUBR students. ( A three credit, summer elective course).
    • WJC students to visit Baton Rouge, Louisiana on study abroad program.
